New CEC more loyal to AL than his predecessor: BNP

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Friday said that the newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner was way ahead of his predecessor Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on ‘Awami partisan spirit’.
‘The new CEC is a committed Awami Leaguer, which was evident in his previous activities, and was also revealed by his speeches soon after he was announced as the CEC,’ remarked BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a press briefing at the party’s central office in Dhaka.
The BNP leader commented that the new CEC did not impart any confidence that the next general election would be fair.
‘If the election is held under him, it would again be unilateral and voterless and thus prolong the prevailing misrule,’ Rizvi predicted.
‘The people will welcome if the CEC steps aside from the constitutional post respecting the public will,’ Rizvi added.
The BNP leader also responded to a recent warning by AL general secretary Obaidul Quader that the BNP might become politically irrelevant if it repeated the mistake of boycotting general elections as it did during the 10th parliamentary elections.
Rizvi rather advised AL general secretary to tell the prime minister to leave power and form a neutral interim government to hold general elections, and thus it would become clear which party becomes irrelevant in politics.
Then the people would get a fair chance of judging which party made mistakes, he added.
The BNP leader came down heavily on the government for its failure to unearth the mystery behind the killings of journalist couple Sagor and Runi even after five years of their deaths.
