Action against pvt univs that fail to move to own campuses: Nahid

Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Sunday said that action would be taken against private universities which had failed to move to their permanent campuses.
The minister issued the warning while presiding over the 18th convocation of Independent University Bangladesh.
Nahid said that some private universities had become outstanding over the years while many had failed to show required minimum progress.
‘Action will be taken against those who are yet to move to permanent campus and have flouted rules and regulations’, Nahid said.
‘We would bar them from enrolling students and take other legal measures against them’, he said.
Nahid, on behalf of the president Abdul Hamid who is also chancellor of the university, conferred degrees to 1,419 graduates at the convocation.
BRAC founder and chairman Fazle Hasan Abed was the convocation speaker while University Grants Commission chairman Abdul Mannan, IUB board of trustee chairman Rashed Chowdhury, IUB vice-chancellor Omar Rahman, among others, spoke.
Fazle Hasan Abed said to the graduates, ‘Your contribution to the society will be your true mark on the world, not what you achieved for yourself.’
He said as the future of the graduates unfolded, many of them would be busy establishing careers, chasing promotion and building families, but in the midst of all the concerns, they should remain engaged citizens of a changing world.
He urged the graduates to prepare for a ‘somewhat uncertain’ future where they would face the challenges of terrorism, climate change, epidemics, and the rising tide of nationalism in the other part of the world.
Abdul Mannan urged the graduates not to forget the contributions of the ordinary people. ‘You owe them a lot and the nation as well’, he said.
Rashed Chowdhury said that the education and experience gathered from the university would help the graduates conquer manifold challenges of the real world.
Omar Rahman expected that the graduates would retain their passion throughout their lives to think differently, contribute to human beings and eventually succeed.
