Autocracy resistance day observed

Left leaning student organisations and different socio-cultural organisations on Tuesday observed the ‘autocracy resistance day’ recalling the campus uprising of 1983 that forced the cancellation of Mazid Khan Education Commission report and forged students’ unity against the military regime of HM Ershad during the time.
The leaders of Madhya February 83 Smiriti Shanrakkhan Parishad, Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Bangladesh Chhatra Federation, Samrajyabadbirodhi Chhatra Oikya and some other organisations placed wreaths at the memorial in front of the Sikkha Bhaban at about 7:00am.
The left organisations also brought out processions on Dhaka University campus marking the day.
Addressing a pre-procession rally, Progressive Student Alliance leaders criticised the ruling Awami League saying that the party had established a hand-in-hand relation with radical Islamic groups that resulted in inclusion of sectarian elements in the school textbooks.
‘The government is now compromising the spirits of War of Independence to cling to power, they added.
They demanded a uniform scientific education system for all to uphold the spirit of secular Bangladesh.
On February 14, 1983, during the martial law regime of HM Ershad, students marched towards education ministry protesting against the Mazid Khan-led education commission report and for restoration of democracy.
Police fired bullets and tear shells at the procession, killing several students and injuring several hundred.
The students’ uprising in 1983 was the beginning of a movement that ultimately toppled the Ershad regime in 1990.
