We’ll try to earn trust of all parties: CEC

The new chief election commissioner, KM Nurul Huda, after taking oath of his office on Wednesday said he would have no connection with any political party, rather he would work for earning trust of all political parties.
Addressing the first news briefing at the Election Bhaban at Agargaon in the capital, he also said that he was not involved in ‘Janatar Mancha’, an anti-government platform sponsored by the then opposition Awami League in 1996.
Huda, a retired secretary, who was promoted following court order after his retirement, also dismissed the allegation that he was involved in the Awami League election board in his home town Patuakhali, saying that the information was not correct.
‘Our first challenge is holding a free and fair election and to earn confidence of all political parties including Bangladesh Nationalist Party,’ he added.
After the name of Huda was announced as the CEC, BNP raised question about his capability and neutrality.
The commission would work following the constitution and relevant laws, he said, adding that the commission would never be influenced by anyone or anything else.
Earlier on the day, the newly appointed CEC and four election commissioners took oath at the Judges’ Lounge of the Bangladesh Supreme Court.
Chief Justice SK Sinha administered the oath of CEC Huda and the election commissioners — Mahbub Talukder, Md Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam and Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury.
Supreme Court registrar general Syed Aminul Islam conducted the oath taking ceremony.
On February 6, president Abdul Hamid constituted the new Election Commission following the recommendation of a search committee in this regard.
