NGWF demand reinstatement of DEPZ factory workers

National Garment Workers’ Federation on Sunday demanded reinstatement of all the 165 suspended workers of Dong Bang Facilities (BD) Ltd, an apparel factory housed in Dhaka Export Processing Zone.
NGWF president Amirul Haque Amin, at a protest rally in front of National Press Club, also demanded punishment of a factory official who allegedly sexually harassed a female worker.
The suspended workers said the factory authorities on Saturday suspended them for holding protests against sexual harassment of a female colleague by the factory’s assistant production manager, Nurul Islam Tipu, on January 26 and observing work abstentions from February 7 to 11,
protesting against the incident.
The factory managing director, Md Rakibul Islam, however, refuted the allegation and said that the workers had beaten up the assistant production manager and vandalised furniture as their wages were unpaid as of February 7, the due date.
He said a case was filed with Ashulia police station in this connection and that Tipu was removed from his post following the workers’ demand.
Among other NGWF leaders, general secretary Arifa Akter, central committee leaders Kabir Hossain, Safia Parvin and Faridul Islam, also spoke.
The speakers alleged that the factory management suspended the workers to silence their voices against any oppression on them.
