Ex-JP MP arrested over MP Manjurul killing

Former Jatiya Party lawmaker A Kader Khan, also a retired doctor of the army, who had reportedly been confined to his Bogra house by the police since February 16, was arrested on Tuesday in the lawmaker Manjurul Islam murder case.

‘We found his involvement in the MP Manjurul Islam Liton killing and he was arrested in Bogra today,’ said Sundarganj police station officer-in-charge Atiar Rahman.

Police also searched his house-cum-clinic at Rahman Nagar in Bogra after the arrest, witnesses said.

Gaibandha Special Branch of police inspector Mahbub Alam and Bogra superintendent of police Md Asaduzzaman said that Kader would be taken to Gainbandha for interrogation in killing of ruling Awami League lawmaker Manjurul.

Both Manjurul and Kader were elected lawmakers from Gaibandha-1 (Sundarganj) parliamentary constituency.

Manjurul was shot by assailants at his house at Sundarganj on December 31, 2016.

The police allegedly cordoned off Kader’s Bogra house Bogra on Feburary 16, 2017.

His wife Nasima Begum Gaibandha-1 parliamentary constituency, alleged that they had been cordoned off inside the house-cum-clinic by plainclothes police since 10:00pm on Thursday.

‘The police officers have told us that they are for providing security to us,’ Nasima told New Age on February 17.

‘We don’t know why the police are cordoning our house off,’ she said.

When approached on February 17, Bogra Detective Branch of police sub-inspector Barkat Ali said that it was now prohibited to enter the house and talk to them.

Bogra superintendent of police M Asaduzzaman had said that the Bogra police were just assisting the Gaibandha police.

Local people said Kader was a potential candidate for the by-election in Gaibandha-1 constituency, which fell vacant after the murder of Manjurul Islam.

Police were trying to bar Kader from submitting nomination paper for the by-election scheduled for March 22. The deadline for the submission of nomination paper would expire on February 17.

Kader, however, later told reporters that he would not take part in the by-polls.
