Former JP MP placed on 10-day remand

A court in Gaibandha on Wednesday remanded former Jatiya Party lawmaker of Gaibandha-1 constituency, Abdul Quader Khan, for 10 days in police custody in connection with the killing of incumbent Awami League lawmaker, Manzurul Islam Liton, in December.
Additional chief judicial magistrate, Moinul Hasan Yusuf, passed the order, approving a petition filed by Sundarganj police inspector (investigation), Abu Haider Md Ashrafuzzaman, seeking a 10-day remand in police custody, to interrogate Quader for proper investigation into the slaying.
The investigation officer, Ashrafuzzaman, submitted the petition after producing the former lawmaker, also a retired army colonel and a physician, before the court, around noon.
Hailing from Paschim Chhaprahati village under Sunderganj upazila in Gaibandha, the man used to live with his family on the third floor apartment of his four-storied house-cum-clinic at Rahman Nagar Ziladarpara in Bogra town from where he was arrested by the detectives, Tuesday afternoon.
Quader, who had reportedly been confined to his Bogra house by police since February 16, was arrested within a day after the inspector general of police had
claimed that Liton’s killers were identified and would be arrested soon.
He has been a prospective candidate for the by-election to Gaibandha-1 constituency, which fell vacant following the killing of Manzurul Islam.
However, Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad on Wednesday said Quader had no political relation with his party.
‘Quader Khan is no more anyone of Jatiya Party. He has not been involved with the party for the past three years,’ Ershad said, while responding to a reporter after a meeting with the party leaders, at Parjtan Motel in Rangpur.
Jatiya Party has nominated Shamim Haider Patwari for the by-election to Gaibandha-1 constituency, he said.
New Age correspondent in Bogra reported that police obstructed Quader from submitting his nomination paper to local election commission office for the by-polls scheduled for March 22.
The deadline for the submission of nomination papers expired on February 17.
Quader had collected his nomination paper for the by-polls but could not submit it, his family members said.
The police headquarters guided the operation of arresting retired military physician in coordination with Bogra police.
A police headquarters official told New Age on Wednesday that Quader was plotting another similar murder weeks after the killing of the ruling lawmaker, on December 31, 2016.
On Wednesday morning, deputy inspector general of police of Rangpur range, Khandaker Golam Faruk, in a press conference at Gaibandha police superintendent’s office claimed that Quader was the mastermind of the shooting death of Manzurul.
‘Based on the confessional statements [of the three made before a Gaibandha Court] and scrutinising other evidences, we now know that the mastermind of the killing is former Sundarganj Jatiya Party MP, retired army colonel and a physician, Abdul Quader Khan,’ said the DIG.
‘The killing was committed as per his plan and that the money came from him,’ he said.
Quader did it to become the lawmaker afresh of Gaibandha-1 constituency, the DIG claimed.
Police also kept Rana, another suspect in the murder case, under surveillance, he said, adding that Rana would be arrested any time soon.
On Tuesday morning, police arrested Quader’s car driver, Abdul Hannan, nephew Shahin Mia and domestic help, Mehedi Hasan, said Sunderganj, OC Atiar Rahman.
The trio gave their confessional statements before the Gaibandga additional chief judicial magistrate, Moinul Hasan Yusuf, Tuesday night, he said.
Meanwhile, police raided Quader’s Bogra residence early Wednesday and seized his microbus, two laptops, four mobile phone sets and the Virtual Video Recorder of the CCTV, reported our Bogra correspondent.
Quader’s elder brother, Khijir Uddin claimed that his brother was a prey to conspiracy.
Liton was shot at point blank range by miscreants at his village home at Masterpara of Bamandanga union under Sunderganj upazila on the last day of December.
He was rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where the physicians declared him dead.
