ANTIBIOTIC, ANTI-CANCER, STEROID MEDICINES: Production by 28 cos banned

The High Court on Monday asked the government to stop production of antibiotic, steroid and anti-cancer medicines by 28 companies within 72 hours on allegation of failure to follow the regulation of good manufacturing practices set by the World Health Organisation.
The bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by rights organisation Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.
The court also asked health secretary, health services director general, Consumer Rights Protection Authority director general, drug administration directorate general, Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries president, inspector general of police and Rapid Action Battalion director general to report to the court about the compliance of the directive.
Petitioner’s counsel Manzill Murshid submitted to the court the an expert committee report on antibiotic, steroid and anti-cancer medicine production of the 28 drug companies and argued that the companies were not following good manufacturing practices set by WHO and acknowledged by the law of Bangladesh.
Production of no drug should be allowed in violation of the law, he contended, adding that substandard medicines were posing a serious threat to public health.
He said that the right organisation filed the public interest litigation as the authorities took no step to ban the production of antibiotic, steroid and anti-cancer medicines by the companies though an expert committee formed by parliamentary body recommended that the production of the medicines by the companies should be stopped.
He said that the expert committee submitted its report to the standing committee on health ministry on February 1, 2016 but its recommendations were yet to be implemented.
