Prisoners without crime can claim damages: PM

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina told parliament on Wednesday that people detained in prisons without committing any crime might claim compensation from the authorities concerned or the state.
‘If anyone [who is in the jail without committing any crime] wants to claim compensation from state, there is a rule for that also,’ she said in her scripted answer to a question from Jatiya Party lawmaker Nurul Islam Milon during the prime minister’s question hour.
Hasina said that the government was taking effective steps like expeditious trials so that no one languished in jail without trial.
‘When I was in jail, I came to know that many people were detained in prisons without trial …. NGOs and government legal aid authority are taking steps to free these people,’ Hasina said in the scripted answer that was tabled in parliament.
Hasina also said that government had taken steps to create speedy trial courts and tribunals and to reform the justice dispensation system to put an end to the case backlogs.
