Former MP Iqbal’s wife, sons, daughter sent to jail in graft case

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent the wife of former Awami League MP HBM Iqbal, his two sons, and a daughter to jail in a corruption case they were earlier sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.

The convicts were - Iqbal’s wife Momtaz Begum Dolly, sons Moinuddin Iqbal, and Imran Iqbal, and daughter Nawrin Iqbal.

Judge Md Ataur Rahman of the Special Judges Court-1 sent Iqbal’s wife Momtaz Begum Dolly, sons Moinuddin Iqbal, and Imran Iqbal, and daughter Nawrin Iqbal to jail after they surrendered before it seeking bail in the case.

Earlier on March 11 in 2008, the same court had sentenced them to three years’ imprisonment and fined them Tk 1 lakh each.

On the same day, HBM Iqbal was sentenced to 10-year rigorous and three years' simple imprisonment in the graft case for committing two different offences including amassing huge amount of wealth by illegal means.

The court fined him Tk 50 lakh and another one-year jail if he failed to pay the fine.

Later, the High Court quashed the convictions handed down by the lower court. The High court also directed them to surrender before the lower court.
