ATTACK ON KHADIZA BCL leader Badrul jailed for life

A Sylhet court on Wednesday sentenced Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Badrul Alam to imprisonment for life term on charge of attempt for hacking Sylhet Government Women’s College student Khadiza Akter Nargis.
Sylhet metropolitan sessions judge Akbar Hossain Mridha also fined Badrul Tk 5,000 and ordered him to serve two more months in jail if he failed to pay the fine.
The judge pronounced the sentence reading out a brief observation he made in the 32-page verdict in presence of Badrul in the dock in the crowded courtroom.
The court observed that the verdict pronounced on the International Women’s Day would contribute to the establishment of the women’s rights.
Shahjalal University of Science and Technology unit of ruling Awami League-backed student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League assistant general secretary Badrul Alam, also fourth year economics student at the university, hacked Khadiza in the head and hands on October 3, 2016, when she came out from her examination hall at MC College in Sylhet city. 
Expressing her satisfaction over the verdict, Khadiza told reporters at her house, ‘I wish all a very good luck to fulfil their dreams and hope that none would face such a situation I faced,’
Khadiza’s uncle Siddek Ali, who filed the case on October 4, 2016, expressed his satisfaction and said, ‘I hoped the verdict would be upheld by all the higher courts.’
Emerging from the court, public prosecutor Misbah Uddin Siraj told reporters that the expeditious disposal of the case sentencing Badrul would remain as an example against such crime.
Badrul’s counsel Sazzadur Rahman said that they would appeal against the verdict. ‘Badrul was drunk when he attacked Khadiza,’ he added.
Earlier on Sunday, the court posted for Wednesday the pronouncement of the verdict after concluding the hearing of arguments that followed the examination of 34 of the 37 prosecution witnesses. The charge was framed on November 29, 2016.
MC College students confined Badrul on the spot and handed him over to the police after a mass beating. They also rushed Khadiza to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital from where she was shifted to Square Hospitals in Dhaka on October 4, 2016. She was moved to the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed at Savar on November 28, 2016. She returned home on February 24, 2017.
Badrul reportedly confessed to the crime on October 5, 2016 stating that he attempted on Khadiza’s life since she did not respond to his proposals for an affair.
The incident triggered protests across the country and the investigation officer submitted the charge sheet against Badrul on November 8, 2016.
On March 1, 2016, chief metropolitan magistrate Saifuzzaman Hero transferred the case to the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court for trial.
Hailed from Munirgyati village at Dakkhin Khurma union under Chhatak upazila in Sunamganj, Badrul lived several months at Khadiza’s house after his admission at the university and taught Khadiza’s younger brother and cousins.
The family, however, drove him out after his unexpected proposal to Khadiza.
