Rundown buses on roads dodging mobile court drives

Rundown buses aged over 20 years continue to transport commuters in the capital dodging mobile courts, said residents.
Dhaka South City Corporation officials told New Age Wednesday that not a single aged and rundown bus could be seized for dumping since the drive was launched by the DSCC nine days back.
They said that 27 mobile courts carried out the drives against rundown buses and driving without licence since the drive was launched on March 5.
Commuters said drivers of aged and rundown buses often detour to skirt mobile court drives or keeping their vehicles off the roads during drives.
DSCC officials said since the drive began three mobile courts jailed 43 bus drivers for driving without licence.
They said 48 buses and lagunas were seized and dumped as their drivers could not show valid papers including fitness certificates.
The mobile courts filed 602 cases against as many buses for various irregularities including drivers’ failure to show valid papers.
For various irregularities, fines worth Tk 12,37, 050 were realized from the bus owners, they said.
The law prohibits pressing of buses older than 20 years on the capital’s roads.
Commuters said that the traffic jams on the capital’s roads reduced as owners withdrew rundown buses from the service out of fear of the drive.
New Age on Tuesday found that at least five rundown buses of Great Turag Paribahan took the road below the Khilgaon Flyover to skirt the mobile court carrying out its drive against unfit vehicles on the flyover. A 2nd violation these buses were committing by taking the route that was not theirs.
Dhaka South City mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon declared on February 15 that not a single bus older than 20 years would be allowed to transport passengers on the streets of the capital.
Executive magistrate Muhammad Abdus Salam said that faulty vehicles were usually withdrawn from the roads as soon as the mobile courts begin their druves.
