Security beefed up at airports, terminals, prisons

Security was beefed up at different key point installations including airports, river ports and prisons in the country as a suspected suicide bomb attack on an under construction establishment of Rapid Action Battalion at Ashkona in Dhaka killed the attacker on Friday.
The suspected attacker was killed and two battalion personnel were injured in the attack, only a day after a baby and four suspected extremists were killed in a police raid on an extremist den in Chittagong on Thursday.
‘Additional security measures have taken at all airports of the country considering the overall situation,’ civil aviation and tourism minister Rashed Khan Menon told New Age.
At Dhaka airport, extra police forces were seen deployed and checking were seen strengthened. Only the passengers were allowed to enter the airport premises, said a number of passengers in the evening.
‘Security was beefed up at all the river ports as a part of beefing up security at all the key point installations in the country,’ said Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority member (operations and planning) Volanath Dey.
Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan said that enhanced security measures were already in place.
‘We asked all the jails to remain alert and beef up security to avoid any untoward incident,’ assistant inspector general (prisons) M Abdullah Al Mamun said.
From now, all on-duty prison guards and officials will have to work in and around the prisons carefully, he said, adding that those on duty outside the prisons would bullet-proof jackets.
He said that the jail authorities were asked to allow the visitors to enter the jail premises after checking them with metal detectors thoroughly.
‘Besides,’ he said, ‘they were asked to keep all the CCTVs active.’
The country has 68 jails.
Security at different key point installations was beefed up following the extremist attack on a Gulshan café July 1, 2016 that killed two police officers and 20 others including 17 foreigners.
Only in a week, suspected extremists attacked a police checkpoint near Sholakia eid congregation on July 7 killing two cops and a housewife of an adjacent house.
