GRENADE ATTACK ON UK ENVOY ANWAR CHY Mufti’s execution anytime

The Appellate Division on Sunday rejected the petitions of Harkatul-Jihad Al Islami chief Mufti Abdul Hannan and two other Huji leaders seeking review of their death sentences for murdering three persons and leaving former UK high commissioner Anwar Choudhury by throwing bombs in 2004.
By rejecting their petition, a three-judge bench of the apex court chaired by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha cleared the way for execution of Mufti Hannan, Sharif Shahidul Alam Bipul, and Md Delwar Hossain Ripon, said lawyers.
The convicts would be executed between 21 and 28 days since the Kashimpur High Security Central Jail receives the copy of the apex court’s order as the Jail Code requires, the prison’s senior superintendent Md Mizanur Rahman told New Age.
He said that the convicts had the option to seek the president’s clemency during the period.
The jail authorities were yet to get the copy of the apex court’s order, he said.
Mufti Hannan and Sharif Shahidul Alam Bipul have been housed in condemned cells of the high security prison and Delwar Hossain Ripon in the condemned cell of Sylhet Central Jail, he said.
The apex court rejected the convicts’ review petitions after a brief hearing.
In the sensational case the convicts threw several grenades aiming at the entrance of the Hazrat Shahjalal’s shrine in Sylhet on May 21, 2004 with the intent of murdering the then UK high commissioner to Bangladesh Anwar Chowdhury when he was about to enter the shrine.
Anwar Chowdhury, Sylhet DC Abul Hossain and 36 bystanders were injured while assistant police sub-inspector Kamal Uddin and two bystanders were killed in the grenade attack.
On February 11, the trial court’s verdict sentencing the three to death and life-terms to Mohibullah alias Mofizur, also Mufti Hannan’s brother, and Mufti Moinuddin alias Abu Jandal were upheld by the High Court Division.
Mufti Hannan was arrested by the police in October2005 in the capital.
