Gas price hike unacceptable: CPB women wing

Women activists of the Communist Party of Bangladesh on Friday demanded immediate scrap of latest gas price hike saying that the government increased the tariff irrationally without improving the service.
At a protest rally in front of National Press Club, they complained that women in many parts of the capital were forced to wake up in the midnight for preparing daily foods as the kitchen burners became ineffective due to low gas pressure.
They also said that gas distributors were running profitable business while the burner users had to pay full tariff despite consuming less than half of 92 cubic feet gas monthly.
President of the CPB’s women cell, Maksuda Akhter, also the chair of the rally, alleged that the gas price hiked for excessive profit of liquid natural gas manufacturers.
She said the government was plotting artificial crisis of natural gas so that the LNG businesses loyal to ruling party could cash huge amount of public money.
Sajedul Haque Rubel, general secretary of CPB’s Dhaka city unit, said the ruling party that grabbed state-power controversially was now favouring the business class to stay in power for long.
Shibani Bhattacharya, Tahmina Yesmin and Aninda Saha, among others, addressed the rally.
A procession was organised later that marched city roads protesting at gas price hike.
