‘Bomb carrier’ killed in explosion near airport

A suspected bomb carrier was killed in an explosion of the explosive he was reportedly carrying between two police boxes in Airport crossing near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Friday evening.
The incident took place at about 7:15pm, police officials said.
Islamic State affiliated Amaq news agency in their telegram claimed the responsibility for the attack.
The place located some 100-metre east of a Rapid Action Battalion installation where a suspected extremist reportedly blew up himself injuring five others on March 17.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police airport zone assistant commissioner Ruhul Amin Sagar told New Age that there were no other casualties.
Senior police officials visited the spot.
Metropolitan police commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia told reporters that it was not an attack. The youth was carrying the explosive to hand over to someone and it was detonated while he was handling it with special care, Asaduzzaman added.
‘It is not similar to the incident that took place in RAB camp in the past week,’ he said citing the pattern of the incidents.
‘If it was a suicide attack, he could have entered the police boxes just 20 feet away,’ the commissioner said.
He said that the deceased could not be identified but he might be 30 years old.
A witness Salahuddin said that he heard the sound of explosion and found a man lying on the road with busted stomach.
The police cordoned the place off public, demarcated the crime scene and sealed off the nearby lane leading to Dakhkhinkhan.
The traffic on the airport road, however, remained normal.
Criminal Investigation Department and bomb disposal unit of police were seen working in the crime scene.
The body of the youth remained laying on the spot in front of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Uttara traffic zone assistant police commissioner’s office until filing the report at 10:45pm. Police surrounded the body erecting tents.
The bomb disposal unit had temporarily sealed off the surrounding areas when they defused other bombs at about 10:45pm.
Dhaka Metropolitan police additional deputy commissioner (Uttara) Shahen Shah said that three people including a staff of a nearby restaurant was injured when the second bomb was being defused at about 11:45pm.
They were sent to Kurmitola Hospital.
Following the injury, police ordered closure of all the nearby business establishments.
On hearing the big bang of defusing the bomb, a student of Babus Salam Madrassah, Bahar Uddin, fainted and his fellows immediately took him to hospital.
