13 killed in Chuadanga road accident

At least 13 people were killed and seven others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and an engine-run vehicle at Damurhuda upazila in Chuadanga on Sunday morning.

Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

The accident took place in Joyrampur area around 6:30am, said Mesbah Uddin, sub-inspector of Damurhuda police station.

The victims being carried by the engine-run vehicle (locally known as Bhatbhati) were day-labourers by profession, he said.

Eight of them died on the spot while injured 12 others were taken to Chuadanga General Hospital and Damurhuda Upazila Health Complex, the police official said.

Four of the injured succumbed to their injuries at Chuadanga General Hospital while one other at the health complex, said Abu Jihad Fakhrul Alam Khan, officer-in-charge of Damurhuda police station.

The deceased were identified as Judge Mia, 32, Shanto, 20, Rofiqul Islam, 45,  Hafizul Islam, 27, Akubbar, 45, Lal Chan, 48, Najir Ahmed, 52, Ijjat Ali, 47, Billal Hossen, 45, Abdar Paul, 43, Billal Hossen, 35, Shahin Ali, 24, all residents of Modna-Parkrishnapur area, and Shofiqul Islam, 42, of village Sultanpur in the upazila.

Police seized the truck but its driver managed to flee.

Earlier on Friday, at least 10 people, including five of a family, were killed and four others injured when a cement-laden truck carrying them overturned on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at Meherbari under Bhaluka upazila.
