Comilla city poll a vital test for EC: BNP

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday termed the forthcoming Comilla City Corporation election, slated for March 30, as a ‘vital test’ for the Election Commission to prove its neutrality.
‘Comilla City Corporation election is going to be a vital test for the newly constituted Election Commission. The EC will have an opportunity to earn the trust of people as well as the political parties through holding a free and fair election,’ said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Ahmed Rizvi.
After a meeting with chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda at Nirbachon Bhavan, a three-member BNP delegation, led by Rizvi, told reporters that they submitted a list of allegations regarding electoral code violation by the ruling Awami League in
Comilla.
This was the new CEC’s first meeting with any political party after his appointment in February.
Rizvi said that they submitted a copy of a statement, previously submitted to the returning officer in Comilla, stating irregularities observed in Comilla.
He alleged that the returning officer concerned did not take necessary action against the ruling party members who were violating the electoral code regularly.
The other members of the delegation were Abdus Salam and Abdul Khair Bhuiyan.
AL mayoral candidate Anjum Sultana Sima and BNP mayoral candidate Monirul Haque Sakku are contesting the poll scheduled for Thursday.
