Five to die for killing journalist Aftab

A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced five people to death for killing award-winning photojournalist Aftab Ahamed in 2013. 
Judge Abdur Rahman Sarder of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 pronounced the verdict at a packed courtroom in the sensational case. 
The death row convicts are Md Humayun Kabir, the chauffer of victim and alleged robbers Habib Hawlader, Belal Hossain, Raju Munshi and Md Rasel. 
Of them, Rasel and Raju remained absconding since the murder while the three were in jail. 
The court also sentenced Md Sabuj Khan to seven years imprisonment and fined him Tk10,000, in default of which, he will have to serve extra one year in jail.
The tribunal also ordered police to submit a supplementary charge sheet against seventh accused Md Nizam through finding out his proper name and address.
The tribunal examined a total of 20 out of 25 prosecution witnesses, including victim’s son Monwar Ahmed Sagar, investigation officer, doctor, who conducted postmortem and magistrates, who recorded the confessional statements of the accused.
According to the case details, on December 25, 2013, veteran photojournalist Aftab, 79, was killed at his Wapda Road in the capital’s Rampura.
Aftab, who won Ekushe Padak in 2006, lastly worked as the chief photojournalist of daily Ittefaq. 
Aftab was reportedly killed by seven robbers, who entered his house with the help of his chauffer. 
The murderers entered the house pretending to pay money in advance for renting a flat in the four-storey building, where he lived alone in a second-floor apartment.
After the murder, a case was filed with Rampura police station in the capital accusing unnamed persons. 
On March 25, 2014 sub-inspector Md Ashik Iqbal of RAB-3 submitted the charge sheet with the Dhaka chief metropolitan magistrate’s court accusing the six people.
Three accused – Humayun, Habib and Belal – made confessional statements before the court acknowledging that they killed the victim in a pre-planned way.
