Derailment snaps rail communications of Dhaka with north regions

Train communications of Dhaka with north regions of the country were suspended as an intercity train derailed at Pathailkandi of Bhuapur upazila in Tangail early Thursday.

The locomotive along with three compartments of Lalmonirhat Express veered off the tracks while the train was leaving Bangabandhu Bridge east zone rail station around 3:45am, said Nurul Huda, the station master.

The intercity train was heading towards Lalmonirhat from Dhaka.

Following the derailment, rail communications remained suspended for hours.

Salvage train was yet to reach the spot till the report was filed at 9:30am.

Thousands of passengers suffered as their trains got stranded at different stations due to the derailment.

Several trains including Sirajganj Express, Chitra Express, Sunderban Express, Nilsagar Express and Ekata Express remained stranded at different stations, our correspondent reported.
