Two killed in Meherpur ‘gunfight’

Two suspected criminals were killed in a reported gunfight between police and their cohorts at Gangni in Meherpur early Friday.

The deceased were identified as Shipan Hossain, 25, son of Madar Ali, of village Dulalnagar, and Alamgir Hossain, 29, son of Abed Ali, of village Chandpur in Gangni.

Tipped-off that a group of criminals gathered at Haridaho field to commit crime, a team of Gangni police conducted a drive there around 3:00am, said Anower Hossen, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the alleged miscreants opened fire on police personnel, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight, he said.

The duo received bullet-wounds during the gunfight and died on the spot while their associates managed to flee, according to the police officer.

Four police personnel also got injured during the gunfight, the police official claimed.

They were admitted to Gangni Upazila Health Complex, he said.

Police also recovered firearms and bullets from the spot, he added.
