Dhaka 2nd largest Facebook user

With 2.2 crore active Facebook users, Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka has the second largest number of people on the Facebook among global cities.
The Facebook authorities have, however, said that they have started deactivating fake accounts and many of the fake accounts were found from Bangladesh.
According to ‘We Are Social and Hootsuite’ April 2017 report, Bangkok topped the list with three crore active Facebook users while Jakarta and Mexico City were respectively the third and the fourth top cities of Facebook users.
New Delhi of India is in the sixth position with 1.3 crore Facebook users and Ho Chi Min City has got the 10th position with 1.1 crore users.
According to the social media monitoring organisation’s January report, Dhaka was placed in the third position with 1.6 crore Facebook users.
The latest report shows that the USA is the top Facebook user county with 21.9 crore users while India is in the second position with 21.3 crore users.
Brazil, Indonesia and Mexico have secured the third, fourth and fifth positions respectively.
Bangladesh’s ICT Division sources said there are 2.33 crore Facebook users in Bangladesh and 99 per cent of social media users are using Facebook, with 1.7 crore male and 63 lakh female users.
The Facebook authorities on Friday announced that it started deactivating fake accounts across the world.
The company has been fighting the spam operation for six months, Shabnam Shaik, a technical program manager at Facebook, wrote in a post on its security blog Friday.
‘The fake accounts Facebook found were made to appear as if they were located in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and a number of other countries’, Shabnam wrote.
Many Bangladeshi authentic Facebook users on Saturday said that they found their accounts deactivated.
Mohammad Ibrahim, a private firm executive in Karwan Bazar, said he could not log on to his account since Saturday morning.
‘Upon arriving at office, I tried to log on to my Facebook account but failed’, he said.
Asaduzzaman from Natore said his friends informed him on Saturday that his account could not be found.
‘Later I could retrieve my account after providing some answer to the auto-generated questions of Facebook’, he said.
