RISHA KILLING Obaidul indicted

Alleged stalker Obaidul Khan, also a tailor, was indicted for hacking 14-year-old Willes Little Flower School student Suraiya Akhter Risha to death in front of her school at Kakrail in Dhaka in August 2016 that triggered countrywide protests.
Dhaka additional metropolitan sessions judge Abul Kashem passed the order in presence of Obaidul in the dock and posted for May 8 the beginning of the recording of testimonies of prosecution witnesses.
Risha, a Class VIII student, was hacked reportedly by Obaidul on August 24, 2016. She succumbed to the injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on August 28, 2016.
Following the hacking, Risha’s mother Tania Hossain lodged a case with Ramna police station accusing Obaidul of attempting to kill her daughter. The case turned into a murder case after the victim succumbed to her injuries.
Obaidul, a tailor shop employee at Eastern Mallika Shopping Mall in Dhaka, had seen Risha at the shop when she went there with her mother to get clothes sewn and he used to stalk her and finally hacked her, according to the charge.
After the crime, Obaidul fled from Dhaka and took shelter at one of his relatives’ house in Nilphamari where police arrested him on August 31, 2016.
On September 5, 2016, Obaidul made a statement before the court of metropolitan magistrate Ahsan Habib reportedly saying that he hacked the girl as she refused his proposal for an affair.
Ramna police station inspector (investigation) Ali Hossain submitted a charge sheet in the case before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on November 14, 2016 against Obaidul naming 26 prosecution witnesses.
On March 22, 2017, Dhaka metropolitan senior special judge Kamrul Hossain Mollah accepted the charge sheet.
