Scarcely in office, Comilla mayor faces arrest warrant

A Dhaka Court on Tuesday issued a warrant for arrest of newly elected Comilla city mayor Monirul Haque Sakku, also a Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader, in a corruption case.
Anti-Corruption Commission had filed the case nearly a decade ago.
The court also ordered seizure of his wealth in the graft case filed on January 7, 2008.
Sakku, however, told New Age that he already got permanent bail from the Supreme Court in this case but the trial court was not informed mistakenly.
On Tuesday, metropolitan sessions judge’s court judge Kamrul Hossain Molla passed the order after taking into cognizance the charge-sheet submitted against Sakku by the ACC.
The commission filed the case with Raman Police Station earlier on January 7, 2008 during the army-backed caretaker government for his alleged involvement in amassing Tk 4.57 crore and concealing Tk 1.12 crore in the wealth statement submitted to the corruption watchdog.
Dropping the name of Sakku’s wife from the charge-sheet, the ACC assistant director Nurul Huda pressed charge-sheet against the mayor on February 4 in 2016.
Sakku said that he would submit a copy of his bail order to the trial court on the next day of hearing on May 9.
On 30 March, BNP candidate Sakku won the Comilla mayoral race with a margin of over 11,000 votes, defeating his nearest rival AL candidate Anjuman Sultana Sima.
Earlier, the elected mayors of Rajshahi city, Khulna city, Sylhet city and Barisal city — all from the BNP — were arrested and suspended from their positions.
Later, the higher court stayed the government’s orders suspending them.
