BNP announces Dhaka city committees

Bangladesh Nationalist Party has announced new committees of Dhaka city unit, dividing it into north and south, nearly three years after the convening committee was assigned to form a full-fledged committee.
The convening committee of unified Dhaka city, headed by BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas as convener and the then Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal president Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel as member-secretary, was announced in July 2014.
The convening committee was asked to form a full-fledged committee within two months but it failed to comply with the instruction.
The partial committees, announced Tuesday night, generated mixed reactions within the party as a number of dedicated party leaders and activists of the city claimed they were not properly evaluated and deprived of posts in the committees.
In some cases, seniority was not maintained as junior and less active leaders were appointed to secretarial posts, the party insiders said.
They, however, admitted that young force was brought to the party leadership.
Some party insiders raised question about appointing Abdul Qayum as president and Ahsan Ullah Hasan as general secretary of the north city unit saying that both of them were absconding abroad, with many cases on their head.
A seventy-member partial committee of south city unit, with BNP joint secretary general Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel as president and joint convener of outgoing Dhaka city convening committee Kazi Abul Bashar as general secretary, was announced through a press release late into the night.
A sixty-member partial committee of the north city unit, with Qayum as president and Ahsan as general secretary, was announced in the same press release.
The press release, signed by BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, asked the partial executive committees to complete the committees in a month.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir approved the two committees.
Fakhrul on Wednesday expressed hope that the new committees would be able to play an important role in future movement for restoration of democracy under the leadership of the party chairperson, Khaleda Zia.
He was talking to journalists at BNP central office when new south unit’s president Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel and general secretary Kazi Abul Bashar, along with other members of the committee, met Fakhrul.
The BNP secretary general said constituting Dhaka city committees was important in the context of the country’s current political situation.
He said youths were given priority in the committees.
Followers of former Dhaka city president Sadeq Hossain Khoka and outgoing convener Mirza Abbas got most of the posts in the committees, the party insiders said, adding that Khoka’s followers got the vital posts.
