Fakhrul challenges AL to test popularity

Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday challenged its arch-rival ruling Awami League to test its popularity by holding an election without any influence of government and police.

He threw this challenge while talking to journalists on the premises of the grave of BNP founder and late president Ziaur Rahman.

Earlier Fakhrul, along with the leaders of the newly-announced Dhaka city BNP north and south units, placed floral wreaths and offered fateha at the graveside of Zia.

A good number of leaders and activists of the two units and the party’s front and associate organisations assembled there on the occasion.

The BNP secretary general said that the next general election without under an ‘election-conducive’ government and a neutral Election Commission could never be free and fair and people would not accept.

He reiterated his call for creating a level-playing field for facilitating a fair election.

Fakhrul said no election was free and fair in the past under the present ‘undemocratic’ and ‘dictator’ government.

Asked AL’s allegation that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia did not visit flood affected haor areas, he said the party chairperson went everywhere where necessary and would again go when necessary.

He alleged that BNP’s relief team was not being allowed to visit Sunamganj before the visit of prime minister Sheikh Hasina to Sunamganj on May 1.

Fakhrul alleged that those (ruling party) did not allow BNP to hold rally and meeting were making such statements to deceive people.

New partial committees of Dhaka city, dividing into north and south, were announced on April 18.

BNP joint secretary general Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel was made president and Kazi Abul Basar as general secretary of south unit while Abdul Qayum and Ahsan Ullah Hasan were made respectively the president and the general secretary of the north unit.
