Opposition MP wants end of debate on judiciary-executive relations

Opposition Jatiya Party lawmaker Fakhrul Imam on Tuesday urged prime minister Sheikh Hasina to hold discussion in parliament to settle the ongoing debate centering which branch of the state holds most authority.

Speaking on a point of order Fakhrul said country’s people are in panic and aggrieved over the current controversy centering relation among the executive, legislative and judiciary — the three branches of the state.

Without naming chief justice’s name, Fakhrul said judiciary is alleging that executive is interfering into judiciary as it is not independent.

Fakhrul said that someone’s is making comments on interference into judiciary by the executive, there is absence of rule of law in the country. ‘How the judiciary can speak too much on those matters?’ Fakhrul asked.

‘Government should look into the matters,’ he said.

Fakhrul also questioned whether the judiciary wants to hold the highest status.

He also added,  ‘We want to know who has the authority— judiciary, executive or legislative?  Legislative has some plus points as it frames constitution, elects president and appoints head of the executive.’

‘I urge the prime minister to stop the ongoing debate through discussion here [in parliament],’ he added.
