Infightings mar BNP’s organisational drives

Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s infightings have been surfaced as senior party leaders have started countrywide organisational tours to gear up leaders and activists at grassroots level.
In recent days, BNP activists clashed at a number of places during BNP’s high-profile organisational drive.
A number of people were injured as two groups of BNP activists clashed during party workers meeting in Barisal on Saturday in presence of BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas.
At least 30 people were injured as two groups of BNP activists, reportedly loyal to Chittagong south district unit general secretary Gazi Shahajahan Jewel and its vice-president Enamul Haque Enam, clashed during a workers meeting of the unit at Patiya on May 3.
At least 15 BNP activists were injured in an intra-party clash at a workers meeting in Jhenaidah town on May 3.
On May 2, two groups of activists of Chittagong north district unit BNP clashed at a workers meeting at the party office at Kazir Dewri in the port city leaving at least 15 activists injured.
The clash forced the leaders to end the meeting quickly after speech of only one of invited guests, BNP standing committee member Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain.
Senior BNP leaders have been assigned to hold workers meetings at all its 77 organisational districts across the country. The drive started on April 28.
The party leaders have been briefed to inform the field-level leaders and activists about the party’s latest stance over the next general election, movement and to strengthen organisational activities during the organisational tour, party sources said.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on April 24 announced 51 high-profile teams to go to the district and city units across the country to hold workers meetings.
The senior leaders have also been briefed to discuss with the grassroots about the party’s Vision 2030, party leaders said.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will unveil the complete charter of Vision 2030 at a press conference on May 10.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the ongoing organisational drive of the 51 teams was to politically inspire the party grassroots.
The team leaders were asked to submit reports on the outcome of their assignment particularly about the opinion of the grassroots over election and movement and organisational weakness, the party sources said.
They would submit the report to the party chairperson, said an organising secretary.
The deadline to complete the organisational tours was set for May 7 but it was relaxed considering unavailability of venue for workers meetings due to obstruction from the local administration, harvesting, nor’wester, rain and flash flood in haor belt, the organising secretary said.
BNP standing committee members, the party’s highest policymaking body,  vice-chairmen, secretary general, joint secretaries general and other important office bearers of the national executive committee, members of BNP chairperson’s advisory committee have been assigned to hold the workers meetings.
For the workers meetings, Fakhrul was assigned to Dhaka city north and south units and Manikganj district, standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain to Chittagong north and south districts and city unit, Mirza Abbas to Barisal north and south districts and city unit,  Goyeshwar Chandra Roy to Rajshahi district and city units, Abdul Moyeen Khan to Noakhali and Lakshipur, Nazrul Islam Khan to Rangpur district and city and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury to Sylhet district and city units.
