HC stays Khaleda’s trial in 3 more arson cases

The High Court Division on Tuesday stayed trials of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in three more arson attack cases.
In separate rulings the court asked the government to explain why the orders of Dhaka Metropolitan Special Tribunal 1 that took the charges against Khaleda in the three cases would not be declared illegal.
A bench of Justice Md Miftah Uddin Choudhury and Justice ANM Bashir Ullah passed the orders after hearing Khaleda’s petitions challenging the legality of the lower court orders.
Until now, Khaleda’s trial in 12 arson attack cases has been stayed.
She faces three more arson attack cases, two of which were filed with a police station in Comilla and another with a police station in Khulna, said her lawyers.
Of the three cases stayed on Tuesday, two were filed by the police with the Jatrabari police station in January 2015 and one with the Darus Salam police station in March 2015.
Her lawyers said that the former prime minister was not an accused in the FIR but she was later falsely implicated in the three cases only to harass her politically.
Former attorney general AJ Mohammad Ali assisted by Mahbub Uddin Khokon appeared for Khaleda.
