Gust snaps electricity in Cox’s Bazar

The electricity in entire Cox’s Bazar was snapped for hours due to damage to electric lines and poles caused by gusts Sunday evening.
Bangladesh Power Development Board Cox’s Bazar executive engineer Mostafizur Rahman said that the electric lines were cut off while a number of poles were uprooted due to gusts, forcing them to snap electricity since 9:00pm.
He could not say when the electricity supply would be restored. 
Weatherman Nazmul Haque in Cox’s Bazar said a low over the bay was lying.
A wind with the speed of 44 kilometre per hour was going on across Cox’s Bazar, he said.
Nazmul said a heavy rain was feared due to the low.
Precautionary signal number three was also hoisted at four seaports in the country.
Intermittent rain was going on across Cox’s Bazar till 11:00pm.
The authorities asked the fishing boats to stay ashore, but Cox’s Bazar Mechanized Fishing Boats Owners Association secretary Mostaq Ahmed said many boats failed to sail ashore.
Met Office weather bulletin issued at 6:00pm on Sunday for the next 24 hours said that the well-marked low formed over west-central bay and adjoining North Bay was lying over the north-west of the Bay of Bengal and adjoining area.
It is likely to intensify into a monsoon depression. Southwest monsoon has advanced up to Barisal, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions, it said.
The bulletin said that rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind was likely to occur at most places in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet and at a few places in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.
