Ctg residents continue to suffer from severe waterlogging

Waterlogging caused by heavy rain continued to cause miseries to the residents of Chittagong for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.
Many areas in the port city went under knee- to chest-high water on Monday. Met Office recorded a 222mm rainfall in Chittagong in 30 hours from 6:00am on Monday.
About 20 lakh residents of different low-lying areas in the city, including Agrabad, Hazi Para, Bepari Para, Goshaildanga Halishahar, Bakalia, Badurtala, and Chandgaon, were stuck in water for the second consecutive day. They were seen travelling on boats.
City dwellers suffered a lot to commute as there were fewer vehicles on the roads. They mainly travelled in rickshaws.
Patients in need of emergency medical attention faced indescribable sufferings because of lack of transports.
Ground floors of most of the government offices, hospitals, and educational institutions were submerged.
Mohammad Ismail, a resident of Sitakunda, said that he had a tough and very long day after his child fell sick suddenly. He finally managed to reach Chhattagram Ma O Shishu Hospital at Agrabad.

The hospital’s deputy director (admin) Mohammad Mosharaf Hossain told New Age that different units of the hospital were submerged and they were facing problems in treating patients.
The ground floor of Tax Zone office in the city was also found under knee-high water at about 1:30pm.
Waterlogging prompted the Chittagong City Corporation to start removing the dam on Mahesh canal, believed to have been the cause behind intensified waterlogging, on Tuesday afternoon.
In presence of Chittagong city mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, the city corporation started removing the embankment on the canal at about 3:30pm.
The Chittagong Port Authority constructed the dam in early 2015 aiming at protecting the city from tidal surges.
The dam, 120 feet in length and 30 feet in height, caused inundation in vast areas of Mirsarai, Sitakunda, Raozan, Rangunia, Boalkhali, Anowara, Chandanaish, Banskhali, Patia and Satkania immediately after its construction.
This is the second time in less than two weeks that the port city was waterlogged by monsoon rain.
