Chittagong city BNP gets ‘giant’ committee at last

Chittagong city unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party found a ‘giant’ full- fledged committee after about two decades.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday approved the 275-member committee submitted to her at the party’s Gulshan office by the three-member Chittagong city BNP committee Sunday evening, confirmed BNP organising secretary for Chittagong division Mahbuber
Rahman Shamim.
Chittagong city BNP had been running for the past two decades without any full -fledged committee. Four committees were formed by the party high-ups during the period but none was full-fledged.
A three-member partial committee of the Chittagong city BNP was formed on August 6, 20216 with Shahadat Hossain, Abu Sufian and Abul Hashem Bakkar as president, vice-president and general secretary respectively. The committee was asked to form a full-fledged committee as soon as possible. It took 11 months to make a full-fledged committee.
According to the BNP constitution, the committee of Chittagong city BNP should have 151 members, but the new full-fledged committee has 275 members.
Abu Sufian, senior vice-president of Chittagong city BNP said that many leaders failed to find position in the committee for a long time as there was no full-pledged committee in the city.
‘So we tried to accommodate them who had been deprived of positions for many years. We also included some young dedicated leaders who were active at root-level in the past couple of years,’ he said.
Party leaders said that Chittagong city BNP had several groups and the unit leaders proposed a giant committee to avert the internal feud.
‘We have many dedicated leaders and activists. But it is not possible to accommodate all of them in the committee. We hope that all leaders and activists will accept the committee for greater interest,’ said Abu Sufian.
Shahadat, Sufian and Bakkar retained their positions in the full-fledged committee.
Shahadat said that they proposed the committee with the consent of senior BNP leaders Amir Khashru Mahmud Chowdhury, Abdullah Al Noman and Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin.
The previous full-fledged committee for Chittagong city BNP was formed in 1997 with Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin as the president and Dastagir Chowdhury as the general secretary.
