Daylong rain, waterlogging, traffic jams paralyse capital

Water stagnation on roads, lanes and by-lanes in the capital on Tuesday after day-long rains caused traffic disruptions and severe tailbacks. Commuters found it difficult to reach places of work on time and the way back home proved equally difficult with many remaining stranded on streets for hours. Rain water laced with sewage made its way into wayside homes and shops at several localities. The Met Office said that it recorded 43 millimeter rainfall in 12 hours until 6 PM on Tuesday. Met Office predicted moderately heavy to very heavy falls might occur in the capital and elsewhere in the country. Residents blasted DWASA and the two city corporations for taking no interest in tackling ever increasing from water-logging making life difficult in the capital. Fed up with recurring tailbacks and water-logging, inhabitants of Malibag, Mouchak, Mogbazar, Rajarbagh, Mirpur, Jatrabari, Rampura, Badda, Shymoli, Mohammadpur, Postagola, Dholaipar, Shyempur and Agargoan said they found none to lodge their complaints or address their problems. Dhaka South City Corporation additional chief engineer Asaduzzaman said that water-logging occurs as drains had been filled with solid waste dumping by locals. Dhaka North City Corporation additional chief engineer Kudrat Ullah said that water-logging would continue to trouble the residents until the capital’s canals and other natural water outlets were restored.
