Stagnant water plunges city traffic into chaos

Daylong traffic gridlocks on most of the roads, lanes and by-lanes in the capital, caused by rain-triggered water stagnation, put the city dwellers to immense sufferings on Wednesday.
Water stagnation was triggered in most of Dhaka city areas due to heavy rain early on the day.
Commuters remained stuck inside vehicles for hours due both to traffic congestion and water stagnation in many areas as it was not possible for them to walk on the damaged footpaths and through dirty water.
In Dhanmondi area, private cars were seen to remain stuck in water after they went out of order, causing tailbacks.
Ordeal of pedestrians also reached its peak on the day due to stagnant water on the road.
The met office recorded 103 millimetres of rainfall in the capital city between 6:00am on Tuesday and 6:00am on Wednesday.

The worst affected areas were Dhanmondhi 27, Lalmatia, Gajnavi road, Kalabagan, Kazipara, Mirpur 1, Mirpur 10, Rokeya Sarani, Bijay Sarani, Farmgate, Monipuripara, Tejkunipara, Karwan Bazar kitchen market, Banglamotor, Kathalbagan, Moghbazar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Kakrail, Khilgaon, Rampura, Banassree, Badda, Motijheel, Arambagh, Fakirapul, Nazimuddin road, Nimtoli and Bakshibazar.

When at a point all the vehicles got stuck in traffic and water congestion, she started to walk with her 10-year son Anin Ashraf on Dhanmondi 27 road wading through water.
To Anin, it was like his previous experience during visiting Cox’s Bazar beach and the difference was that the water in Dhaka was very ‘dirty’.
In the adjacent areas of Dhanmondi 27 road, many vehicles were seen going afloat while a good number of vehicles went out of order.
At Mirpur’s Kazipara, motorcycles could not cross the area as water on the road was higher than their height while huge traffic congestion was also there.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police additional commissioner (traffic) Mosleh Uddin Ahmed told New Age that since Wednesday morning severe traffic congestion were seen almost all over the city due to water stagnation.
