RAB cordons off ‘extremist den’ at Ashulia

The Rapid Action Battalion kept a house located at Noyarhat-Chourabali in Ashulia, on the outskirts of Dhaka, cordoned off since early Sunday suspecting it a hideout of extremists.

Tipped-off that the house was being resided by extremists, the battalion personnel cordoned off the house around 1:00am, said RAB’s legal and media wing director Mufti Mahmud Khan in a briefing on the spot around 7:00am.

Other residences of the nearby houses were evacuated, he said.

The extremists opened fire on the law enforcers around 3:00am, Mufti Mahmud continued.

They also opened fire targeting the battalion members some time before 7:00am when RAB also retaliated, he said.

He said they assume presence of more than one extremist inside the house but it is not possible to say their numbers right now.

‘We are trying to make them surrendered.’

Meanwhile, the owner of the house was taken into RAB’s custody and being interrogated, the battalion official said.

He, however, did not disclose the name of the house owner immediately.

‘It is not possible to say which extremist organisation they belong to but it is certain that they are extremists.’

Locals said the RAB using hand mike called on the suspected extremists to surrender several times.
