2 killed in Khulna ‘gunfight’

Two people were killed in a reported gunfight between police and miscreants in railway station area in Khulna Sadar early Monday.
The deceased are Babu alias Guddu Babu, 35, of village Jandalia under Kathalia in Jhalakati and Md Al Mahmud, 24, of village Telikhali under Bhandaria in Pirojpur.
Babu used to live at Baidyapara under Khulna Police Station and Mahmud at Pabla in the city. They were involved in criminal activities including toll collection, drug peddling and mugging.
Both of them were wanted in at least half a dozen cases, including one for murder and an attempt to murder, lodged with different police stations in Khulna.
With the two, deaths in reported gunfights reached to seven in the ongoing month.
Human rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra data show that a total of 90 people were killed either in law enforcing agencies’ custody or in gunfights in the past six months until June 30.
Khulna Sadar police officer-in-charge Mijanur Rahman said they arrested Babu from the city Sunday night and, as per his confession, went to Khulna Railway Pravati Primary School area to ‘recover’ firearms and ammunitions.
But, sensing presence of police, his associates fired gunshots targeting police and police retaliated by firing, triggering a gunfight around 1:00am, he said.
He claimed that Babu and Mahmud received bullets opened by the miscreants during the gunfight.
Police immediately rushed them to Khulna Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared them dead.
The police recovered a gun, bullets and sharp weapons from the spot.
