N’GANJ SEVEN-MURDER CASE AG for upholding death of 16 RAB members, 10 others

Attorney general Mahbubey Alam on Sunday argued in the High Court in favour of upholding the lower court verdict in the sensational seven murders that took place in Narayanganj in 2014.
On January 16, a trial court in Narayanganj handed death sentence to 26 accused and various jail terms to nine others finding them guilty of murdering local Awami League leader and Narayanganj City Corporation ward councillor Nazrul Islam, lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarkar and five others.
The 26 convicts include local Awami League leader Noor Hossain, the then Rapid Action Battalion commanding officer in Narayanganj Lieutenant Colonel Tarek Sayeed Mohamamd and RAB officers Major Arif Hossain and Lieutenant Commander Masud Rana.
Sunday was the 31st day of the High Court’s hearing in the death reference of the 26 convicts and the appeals filed by 21 detained accused challenging their sentences.
The government completed its argument in the sensational case and Monday has been posted for hearing on the reply of lawyers of the convicts to attorney general’s argument.
The hearing took place before the bench of Justice Bhabani Prasad Singha and Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam.
The attorney general argued that the death sentences of all 26 people — 16 RAB personnel and 10 other people — should be upheld to ensure rule of law and restore people’s faith towards RAB whose image was tainted following murder of seven people.
He said that Noor Hossain being the ringleader of the barbaric act had conspired with the RAB officers to kill his political rival Nazrul Islam, the then ward councillor of Narayanganj City Corporation.
The attorney general said that the convict RAB officers had materialised Noor Hossain’s conspiracy in exchange of a huge amount of money.
On April 30, 2014, the victims were abducted and their bodies were later found floating in the River Sitalakhya.
