Freedom fighter Ziauddin dies

Freedom fighter Ziauddin Ahmed, who was sub-sector commander in the Sunderbans during the Liberation War, died on Friday. He was 67.
The retired army major breathed his last at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital early Friday, said a liberation war affairs ministry release.
Ziauddin had been suffering from liver ailments for the past two years. He was admitted to Square Hospital in Dhaka after falling ill on July 1. He was later taken to Singapore on July 11.
President Abdul Hamid and prime minister Sheikh Hasina in separate messages condoled the death of Ziauddin, reported BSS.
In a message, the president expressed his deep shock at the death of Ziauddin and recalled his contributions to the Liberation War. He also prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed his sympathy to the bereaved family.

Born in 1950 in Pirojpur, Ziauddin was the commanding officer for the First East Bengal Regiment fighting the war against Pakistan under sector-9.
He was one of the witnesses of the murder case of country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
After completing higher secondary certificate from Pirojpur Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Ziauddin joined Pakistan Army in 1969. He was commissioned in 1970 and fled from Lahore in March, 1971 to join the Liberation War.
He was sub-sector commander in the Sunderbans where he fought many battles against Pakistani forces.
In 1975, Ziauddin was serving the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence. Following assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he was relieved of his job as major.
He later moved to his home district Pirojpur and joined Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal.
He formed an organisation of fishermen in the Sunderbans named Dubla Fisherman Group, which worked to eliminate bandits from the area.
He also floated a nonpolitical organisation to save the Sunderbans.
Ziauddin also served as municipality chairman in Pirojpur between 1989 and 1991. He joined Awami League in 1996 and advised Awami League’s Pirojpur unit.
Liberation war affairs minister AKM Mozammel Haque, different organisations, including Jatiya Ganatantrik League and Barisal Bibhag Samiti, also condoled the death of Ziauddin.
