RAPE, TORTURE IN BOGRA Protests continue all over

Political and cultural activists demonstrated for the second consecutive day on Tuesday protesting at the Bogra rape and torture incident and demanded exemplary punishment of the politically influential perpetrators.
They blamed culture of impunity for the widespread rights violation and warned the ruling government would face harsh consequences if the unruly party activists were not punished.
They demanded the highest punishment of Bogra unit Awami Sramik League leader Tufan Sarkar, the rapist, and other alleged criminals behind the rape of a Bogra college girl and torturing her mother.
Meanwhile, Awami Juba League on Tuesday suspended its Bogra district unit joint secretary Abdul Matin Sarkar, also brother of Tufan Sarkar, from the organisation in connection with the rape and torture incident.
District Juba League general secretary Aminul Islam Dablu confirmed Matin’s suspension.
A Bogra court on Tuesday afternoon recorded statement of the rape victim.
Mother of the rape victim, who was also tortured, filed a case on Friday against Tufan, his wife Asha Khatun, sister and Bogra municipal councilor Rumki Khatun and seven others with Bogra Police Station alleging that the goon tortured the duo physically and shaved their heads in a staged arbitration.
Bogra police so far arrested 11 people, including the main accused, Tufan, in connection with the crime.
Bangladesh Juba Union and Bangladesh Chhatra Union jointly organised a protest rally in front of National Press Club.
Speakers at the programme said the ruling Awami League activists held people hostage by showing their muscle power.
They said the crimes could be checked if the government tried the rapists and killers of Afsana, Tonu and others.
Chaired by BJU president Hasan Hafizur Rahman Sohel, the rally was addressed by BJU leaders Hafiz Adnan Riad, Riaz Uddin, Tridib Saha, Ashikul Islam, BSU leaders Zilani Shuvo, Dipak Sheel, Kazi Rita and Lovely Haque, among others.
Our Bogra correspondent reported that local political and cultural activists organised protest rally and human chain demanding exemplary punishment of Tufan Sarkar and his associates who tortured the college girl and her mother.
Local leaders and activists of Communist Party of Bangladesh, Socialist Party of Bangladesh, Democratic Left Alliance, Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi, Samajtantrik Mahila Forum, Bangladesh Nari Mukti Kendra and others organised a human chain at Satmatha.
District unit of Bangladesh Nationalist Party also held a rally at Nabab Bari Road demanding punishment of the rapist and his associates.
Our Barisal correspondent reported that district unit of Prothom Alo Bandhusabha organised a protest rally at Ashwani Kumer Hall, demanding proper trial and punishment of the perpetrators of Bogra rape and torture incident.
They said that the recent crimes against women and children proved the state of lawlessness in the country.
Weak implementation of law and political nepotism created the culture of impunity in society that threatened common people, they said.
