Govt wants to divide judges, says CJ

The chief justice, SK Sinha, said on Tuesday said that the government wanted to create division among judges.
Justice Sinha made the remarks during a hearing in the Appellate Division, two days after law minister Anisul Huq at a discussion in Jessore on Sunday reportedly said, ‘The judiciary doesn’t mean only one person.’
The chief justice reacted to law minister’s remarks when attorney general Mahbubey Alam moved a government petition seeking further adjournment of hearing on its appeal against a High Court verdict that had declared illegal the operation of mobile courts led by
executive magistrates.
The six-judge bench of the Appellate Division adjourned the hearing for two weeks.
The chief justice asked the attorney general Mahbubey Alam, ‘What did you mean by one person?’
The chief justice reminded the attorney general that that court proceedings could not be a subject matter of discussion in parliament or in public.
He told the attorney general that the chief justice’s remarks during court proceedings became a public debate among the ministers.
Mahbubey Alam replied that both the sides should refrain from making comments.
The chief justice wanted to know from the attorney general if he made any political statements in the courtroom.
He also wanted to know from attorney general that that the independence of judiciary was being taken away and ‘we can’t even talk.’
The chief justice said that judges usually made remarks relating to matters that came up for hearing.
‘Can’t we make remarks,’ the chief justice asked the attorney general.
