Section 57 being misused: Quader

Ruling Awai League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said that Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology Act was being misused.
Obaidul Quader, also minister of road transport and bridges, made the comment while visiting the development work of the metro rail project at Agargaon in the capital.
‘I think what has happened in Khulna is the misuse of Section 57 [of ICT Act] and the information minister should intervene to check such misuse,’ Quader said.
He suggested that higher authorities’ consent should be made mandatory before filing such case against anyone.
Police arrested a local journalist early Tuesday under Section 57 of the ICT Act after he had shared on facebook a news report which stated that a goat died hours after it was handed over by state minister for fisheries and live stock Narayan Chandra Chanda to a resident at Dumuria in Khulna.
Khulna’s senior judicial magistrate Nusrat Jabin sent Abdul Latif Morol, 50, a local reporter of Khulna-based Daily Prabaha to jail on the day keeping pending his bail hearing for Wednesday. Abdul Latif was granted bail on the day amidst widespread criticism from different quarters.
This type of cases should not be filed hurriedly while the issues were negligible, like the incident in Khulna, Quader added.
About civil society members’ recent suggestions to Election Commission, the AL general secretary differed with the view of deploying armed forces in the next general election, saying they should not be brought into any controversies and embarrassment unnecessarily.
‘Election Commission could deploy them [armed forces] if needed in consultation with the government which is mentioned in the constitution,’ Quader said.
