KILLING OF FIVE OF A FAMILY Lone accused Mahfuz to die

A Narayanganj court on Monday sentenced a youth, Mahfuzur Rahman, to death for killing five members of a family at Baburail in Narayanganj city in January 2016.
Narayanganj district and sessions judge Hosne Ara Akter gave the verdict. Mahful was also fined Tk 5,000.
With Mahfuz in the dock, the court delivered the verdict after examining 23 witnesses and documents submitted by the prosecution.
The court announced the capital punishment as it was proved beyond reasonable doubt that Mahfuz killed Taslima Begum, 35, wife of car driver Shafiqul Islam, their children Sumaiya, 5, Shantu, 10, Taslima’s brother Morshedul, 22, and Lamia Akhter, 25, who was married to Shafiqul’s brother Sharif.
Shafiqul, the plaintiff of the case who lost his wife and two children, expressed satisfaction over the verdict and urged the authorities to execute it as soon as possible.
The convict’s lawyer Sultan Uddin Nannu said that his client would appeal against the verdict.
The five were found dead in their residence on January 16.
On January 17, Shafiqul filed the case naming three, including Mahfuz, a nephew of Shafiqul, with Narayanganj Sadar police. The
police arrested Mahfuz on the following day.
Later, Mahfuz made a judicial statement before the court confessing that he had killed the five, one after another, to take revenge as he had been rebuked and barred by Shafiqul from entering his house over an extra-marital affair.
On April 7, the police pressed the charge-sheet against Mahfuz in connection with the killings.
The trial was completed on July 30.
