Six killed as train rams auto-rickshaw at unmanned level crossing

Six people were killed and two others were injured when a train hit a battery-run auto-rickshaw at Chandra level crossing in Jamalpur town Wednesday evening.
The level crossing had no gate barrier or gateman. 
The deceased and the injured were the driver of the auto-rickshaw and its passengers. 
The deceased were identified as auto-rickshaw driver Abdur Rahim, 45, son of Abdul Barek of Chandra, Sanwar Hossain, 28, son of Rehen Ali, Hossain Ali, 45, son of Nawsher Ali of Kampapur, Mir Hossain, 30, son of Shah Alam, Intaj Ali, 45, son of Toyab Ali, and Saleha Begum, 40, wife of Abdul Aziz of Shahabajpur under Sadar upazila.
Sadar police officer-in-charge Nasimul Islam told New Age that the accident occurred when a local train on Mymensingh-Dewanganj route hit the auto-rickshaw, carrying eight passengers, on the level crossing around 6.30pm.
The train had pushed the auto-rickshaw 25-30 foot away from the level crossing before it fell into a trackside ditch, leaving Sanwar dead on the spot.
Intaj, Mir and Rahim succumbed to their injuries on their way to Jamalpur General Hospital, said the OC.
Later, critically injured Hossain and Saleha died around 8:30pm on their way to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, said Hossain’s father Nawsher Ali.
Critically injured Gulbux and Faridul were on the way to MMCH as of filing the report at 9:00pm.
