Mukta Moni’s first operation ‘successful’

The 10-year-old Satkhira girl, Mukta Moni, who had been suffering with tumour in an artery of her right arm, underwent a successful surgery in the arm at the burn and plastic surgery unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday, according to doctors.
Her operation was conducted a week after the doctors conducted her biopsy, through which they had diagnosed existence of the tumour in her artery on August 5.
‘We could successfully remove the flesh from Mukta Moni’s [right] hand by saving the hand,’ said Samanta Lal Sen, coordinator of the DMCH burn and plastic surgery unit, said in a press conference at the unit’s conference room immediately after her two-hour operation was performed by a team of 21 physicians.
‘But, the girl will need to go through more operations and we will perform those in phases,’ he said.
The girl was taken to the intensive care unit of the burn unit and was kept under close observation, he informed.
The delighted physician said that the operation was successful due to proper teamwork. ‘All tried
their best.’
Professor Abul Kalam Azad of the unit, who led the operation, said that it was not a proper time to say whether she was out of danger. ‘There is possibility of bleeding from her hand.’
Mukta Moni’s mother Asma Begum at the hospital said that she and her family members were happy with the treatment at DMCH.
She said that they had noticed a tumour-like-growth in Mukta Moni’s right hand when she was one-and-a-half years old. ‘The tumour did not grow until she was six. Later, it began to swell and expand turning her right-hand look like “a body pillow”.’
The girl was admitted to DMCH on July 11 and grabbed media headlines due to the look of her swelled hand.
The prime minister then took responsibility of treatment of the girl and asked the burn unit coordinator whether she could be treated at the General Hospital in Singapore, Samanta said.
But the hospital, after watching her condition during a video conference, opined that it was ‘a difficult case’ and her affected hand might be needed to cut off.
Later, the PM asked him to continue the girl’s treatment in the country, he said.
