Flood causes fisheries losses worth Tk 723.44cr

The devastating floods washed away fish and its farming facilities worth Tk 723.44 crore in 32 districts, mostly in the north, Fisheries Department officials told New Age quoting initial estimates.
They expressed fears that the losses could turn out to be much higher as reports pouring from outlying areas indicate.
Reports already received indicate that until August 21, they said, fish and fish fingerlings were washed away from 44,807 hectares of fish farms causing devastating losses to 1, 27,938 fish farmers.
DoF’s principal scientific officer Mustafizur Rahman told New Age that he would expect the losses to increase.
He said that the DoF was receiving daily updates from field level officers on the losses suffered by fish farmers.
DoF officials said that the floods caused losses to many fish farmers since April.
Historically known as among the world’s most suitable area for fisheries, Bangladesh with its vast flooded wetland takes the 3rd place in Asia for its aquatic biodiversity after China and India, said officials. 
Bangladesh’s inland aquaculture significantly increased over the years. 
According to officials, fisheries losses suffered in 32 districts, include two in Sylhet division, six in Rajshahi, eight in Rangpur, three in Khulna, five each in Dhaka and Chittagong
