SAGAR-RUNI MURDER RAB misses 50 deadlines for probe report

A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate’s court on Wednesday asked Rapid Action Battalion to submit by October 8 its report on the investigation into the sensational murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi.
Metropolitan magistrate Md Mazharul Haque passed the order as the battalion’s assistant superintendent of police Mohiuddin Ahamed, also the investigation officer of the case, missed the 50th deadline for the submission of the report on Wednesday in the past five years.
Sagar, news editor of private television channel Maasranga, and his wife Runi, senior reporter of another television channel ATN Bangla, were killed at their rented apartment at West Rajabazar in Dhaka on February 11, 2012.
Eight people––Tanveer Rahman, Enam Ahmed alias Humayun Kabir, Rafiqul Islam, Bakul Mia, Mitu alias Bargira Mintu alias Masum Mintu, Kamrul Hasan Arun, Palash Rudra Paul and Abu Sayeed––were implicated in the murder case.
Though all the accused had been remanded in custody more than once for interrogation, none of them yet confessed to the killing.
The battalion was given the responsibility for the investigation into the the murder on April 18, 2012 by the High Court, after Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police failed to resolve the murder mystery.
Among the arrested eight accused, Tanveer Rahman, a ‘family friend’ of the journalist couple, was released on bail, but the others were now in jail.
