Rail link in some northern dists not to be restored before Eid

Rail communications of some of the northern districts with rest of the country would not be restored before Eid-ul-Adha, said Bangladesh Railway officials.
Rail link of Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Kurigram and portions of Dinajpur and Lalmonirhat districts under Rangpur division remained suspended for more than 17 days, they said.
BR director general Md Amzad Hossain told New Age on Monday that Panchagarh-Dinajpur, Lalmonirhat-Burimari and Tista-Ramnabazaar (Kurigram) rail sections would not be restored before Eid to be celebrated on September 2.
Meanwhile, people’s Eid journey started with BR’s special service from Sunday while suspended rain communications were forcing people to use dilapidated risky roads.
Earlier on August 12, rail communication in Panchagarh-Thakurgaon section was suspended as the track went under water.
On August 13, about 40 feet rail line near Boro Bridge in Tograihat area under Sadar upazila in Kurigram bent as a girder had collapsed because of heavy current of water and Lalmonirhat-Burimari section also went under water.
Schedules of local, shuttle and DEMU trains on these three sections were suspended, said railway officials.
As no intercity trains ran on these sections, local, shuttle and DEMU trains facilitated passengers from Dinajpur, Lalmonirhat and Rangpur to reach Thakurgaon, Panchagarh, Kurigram and Burimari, they added.
According to railway’s engineering department, it would take long time to repair the Tista-Ramnabazaar (Kurigram) section as a rail bridge broke down at the section.
Flood water also damaged a big portion of the Dinajpur-Panchagarh section which would also take long time to repair.
Amzad Hossain said there would be no problem for trains to start journey from the capital to Khulna, Rajshahi, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Chittagong, Sylhet, Mohonganj, Kishoreganj, Dewanganj and Jamalpur routes.
‘We always see passengers’ pressure on trains during Eid due to congestion on and bad condition of roads and this Eid is no different,’ he said.
