Over 700 vehicles wait to cross Padma on Shimulia-Kanthalbari route

More than 700 vehicles, mostly cars, were in the long queues at Shimulia pontoon in Munshiganj to reach Kanthalbari in Madaripur crossing the River Padma on Thursday morning.

Extra pressure of vehicles loaded with home-bound people and laden with goods caused the queues ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, said officials of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation.

Md Abdul Alim, manager (commerce) of BIWTC at Shimulia pontoon, said more than 700 vehicles, including 500 passenger vehicles and 200 trucks laden with goods, were waiting to cross the river.

Eighteen ferries were in full operation amid the strong current of the Padma to reduce the pressure, he said.

Another ferry is going to be added today for special service, Abdul Alim said.

Alongside the ferry pontoon, passengers also poured in sea-boat ghat area since morning.
