Schoolgirl’s death in road accident sparks protest in city

Residents of the city’s Kazipara area kept the Mirpur-Farmgate road blocked for about one and a half hours till 2:00pm on Tuesday following the death of a 12-year-old schoolgirl there.
The victim was Tasnim Alam Trisha, 12, daughter of Khorshed Alam and Reema Begum of Dhurgari under Pirganj in Rangpur. She used to live with her family at Kazipara under Mirpur in the city and was a Class-V student at Laboratory Ideal School at Mirpur.
Kafrul police sub-inspector Md Rafiqul Islam, who visited the spot, told New Age that the girl had met the fatal accident around 12:45pm.
A Farmgate-bound bus of Tentulia Paribahan from Mirpur-10 hit her when she was crossing the road. She died on the spot, he added.
Locals said they, immediately after the accident, blocked the road and demonstrated for safe road and an exemplary punishment for the bus driver who they had caught from the bus and handed to police.
Vehicular movements came to a halt, they said.
As the news spread, more people gathered on the spot and the agitated people set fire to the Tentulia Paribahan bus about 1:25pm, they said.
Firefighting cars rushed to the spot and doused the fire, fire service and civil defence control room officials said.
Senior police officials were able to calm the agitating people by 2:00pm assuring them of bringing the people responsible to book, Rafiqul said.
He said that a case was lodged with his police station and they arrested the Tentulia Paribahan driver Abdur Rahim alias Babu, about 28.
