CJ’S LEAVE Govt forced CJ to take leave: BNP

Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Wednesday said chief justice SK Sinha was not sick rather the government ‘forcibly’ prevented him from discharging his duties.
The party wanted to know the stance of the chief justice about his sickness and going on leave for one month soon after the Supreme Court spent a long vacation.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the remarks giving the party’s formal reaction to the chief justice Sinha’s leave on health grounds that came into effect on Tuesday.
Flanked by the party’s senior leaders, Fakhrul at a news conference at BNP’s central office in Dhaka said on Monday evening Supreme Court Bar Association president and secretary went to the residence of the justice Sinha to meet him.
A police officer told them quoting the chief justice as saying that ‘I am in good health but cannot talk now,’ said Fakhrul. Many things came in mass media and social media over the CJ’s leave, Fakhrul said.
From these it was proved that the chief justice was ‘not sick,’ and he (Sinha) was compelled to refrain from performing responsibility.
The BNP leader said such behaviour with the highest judge of the highest court proved that the government became ‘unnerved in fear of crisis of existence.’
He said BNP condemned the government’s such vindictive behaviour against the highest court.
In reply to a question, Fakhrul said his party as well as the nation wanted to know the chief justice’s stance about his leave.
Fakhrul said justice Sinha came under fire after he had scrapped the 16th amendment to the constitution.
Fakhrul said they (government) raised objection to the verdict on 16th amendment and bitterly criticised the chief justice.
BNP feared that they (government) forced him (Sinha) to go on leave, he added.
The BNP leader said the SK Sinha had recently visited Japan and Canada and if he was sick why he did not receive treatment in those countries that had better healthcare system.
Even Sinha went to his office, took some important decisions and signed files on Monday, Fakhrul said.
BNP’s standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the latest incident of questionable leave of chief justice is a big hit on judiciary.
BNP standing committee members Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Nazrul Islam Khan, senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and BNP chairperson’s adviser Abdus Salam, among others, were present.
